Presented by Sarah Walker and Rob Cowan, this radical strand, with its tight format, celebrity guests, regular features and strong music policy was Radio 3’s most popular programme from the word go.
EMI - Powder Her Face by Thomas Ades
homas Adès’s provocative, witty and touching debut opera was recorded by Classic Arts for EMI and BBC Radio 3 soon after its premiere. The libretto by Philip Hensher was based on the life of the Duchess of Argyll, portrayed on this recording by Jill Gomez.

Garsington Opera - Cherevichki
lassic Arts recorded Tchaikovsky’s comic opera Cherevichki during a run of performances at Garsington Opera. Although it is rarely heard, this charming opera, based on a Russian Christmas folk tale, remained Tchaikovsky’s favourite among all his operas.
